The Real Power of the DC Universe

Adam Hughes

Rather cool looking poster actually.  If superheros did exist Annie Leibowitz would probably be shoting them for the cover of Vanity Fair.  It was given away at the  New York City Comic Con last weekend.  The balance & composition are beautiful.  The outfits fit each personality.  A bit heavy with Batman characters.

There's been debate whether the 1 seated on the bench is Lois Lane (Occasional Superheriones, One Diverse Comic Book Nation), but it seems to be that it's actually Batwoman, I don't know much about her, she's one of those that they did away with during the Crisis and have only recently brought back.  According to the boards she's a Lesbian, so it sorta bugs me that she's the one in pants sitting in a masculine pose (Brad, the boyfriend is going to laugh that that's gets me, he already likes to tease me that I don't look like someone who would be into this stuff, but I live in the Twin Cities which has a large gay/lesbian community).  I don't think the picture overall is sexist, the guys are also drawn completely perfect in comics.  Superhero comics generally are about fantasy and escape, not realism.  I think the title is all wrong, The Real Power of the DC Universe, comics are known for being misogynist and making female superheros less prowerful purely becuase they are female.  Alot of people would consider Lois a powerful character and not just becuase she's married to Superman.  But, DC seems to have the view that she's not a superhero there for she's not powerful.

Alittle off topic, but this reminds me of when I worked in a coffee shop when I was in college.  It was close to the MIA and MCAD, so alot of art students would come in.  (MCAD also has comic art as a major).  Well, a group of them were in having a disussion about what superpower they would want & why.  I knew them, they were regulars at the shop.  I brought some drinks over, and they asked me.  I said flight, but thought a moment and with a smile and a raise eyebrow or just be Lois Lane.  They of course all roared with laughter.

Anyway, my verdict on this poster: Lip Service...but beautiful lip service.  I may still get one;-)

Did anybody hear about this?

The Adventures of Superman - George F Lowther

Since I heard about this boook a couple years ago, it's been abit of a curiosity for me.  I love history, americana, pop-culture sort of things.  Lowther (he's name is strangly similar to Luthor, I don't think it's a coincedenc, but I couldn't find anything online thought about this) was a writer on the Superman radio show in the 40's, which is credited for changing the Daily Star to the Daily Planet, George Taylor to Perry Whilte, adding Jimmy Olson, creating Kryponite, and generally filling out the Superman story.  It was originally published in 1942, and published again in 1995, with an introduction by Roger Stern.  Stern was one of the major writers on the Superman comics in the 90's, wrote the novel version of the Death of Superman, and is credited with having Lois & Clark get engaged and Lois finally in on the secret.  But, alas when I would try to find a copy even the new one from 1995, they just seemed to be going for ridiculous prices,  anywhere.  Knowing as I do that all things are cyclical, I decided that this would just have to wait.  Well, I forgot about it, till a day last week, I was just generally killing time and low & behold a copy from 1995 was on Ebay and was only at about $25.  The seller had it listed as new.  I got it for $32 including the S/H, and just got it the other night..  I only read the into last night, Stern could honestly teach a college course on Superman, so far I'm happy.

but, it's my journal, so there...ha-ha!!

My boss is out in AZ, flew out yesterday & is staying through Friday.  His manager has switched positions to a management position in HR, I know he has applied for her job and from the looks of things he's probably going to get altough I think he thinks I don't know.  He is already very over paid, lives in a new condo, in a new high rise a couple blocks away from work.  So, what this will mean for me, most likely more work at the same pay.  An Administrative Assistant's position & pay is pretty much based on the level of the manager that they support, but I don't think they will change mine.  Although I know that if I left they would post this position at a higher level & more pay, how far is that?

I applied for a Marketing Administrator position last week.  When I read the description & duties, it's really just a glorified admin, but it would be more money & away from my boss.  I got a response after I submitted my resume, thanks for sharring, blah, blah, it may take us some time to get back to you, blah, blah.  Translation my resume got past the recruiter who did the screening, and has been sent to the hiring manager.  I still have not heard anything else though...think positive, I know, believe me I'm trying.

I don't know what to feel about this, should I try to take it again?

I just having a really very bad day, but thank God my boss is out, so I don't have to deal with him.

PayPal really just pissed me off.  My account is a few years old and unverified, like I know or care what unverified means.  I use PayPal to receive payments for my photographs, but also for shopping online and paying for Ebay stuff.  I've been expecting a couple payments this week, which still haven't come through, and I found out why when I was trying to pay a couple things on Ebay.  Becuase my account is "Unverified" I have a $0 spending limit and they have not sent the money that has been sent to my bank account.  This account is a few years old,  WTF?!  I really don't get this, but of course it's something that takes 3-5 business days.  I never received any email from them.  They are not going to send the payments I have received to my bank account and I can't pay for anything either.  I wasted over an hour on the phone with those morons this morning!

My boss needed me to change a trip that he will be taking next week.  The thing is my company changed the site I have to use now, and I hate the new one.  It is slow and gives stupid error messages that make no sense.  I had to call them up, becuase the new site doesn't give an option to cancel the old flights.  This is going to suck, my boss changes his trips alot.  I had to call them & deal with the stupidiest woman.

I keep thinking I just want to crawl back into bed.

I live in Florence Court.

(the black & white is the street side, back of the building and the color is the front of, court yard side of the building)

You can't see my apartment in the pictures, but you get the idea.  It's unique, rather bohemian (alright a dump, but I can say that I live there;) they look nicer on the inside.   A few years ago it was bought buy Financial Freedom.  (Doesn't they name sound like they learned real estate from an infomercial?)  They've been written about in the NY Times (check out the story here), becuause they buy little apartment buildings, slap some paint on them & turn them into condos.  The Twin Cities has had a shortage of affordable housing for years.  Barbara Ehrenreich even wrote about it in her book Nickel and Dimed.

She tried living here and worked a a Wal-Mart, where she made more than minimum wage, but couldn't survive, becuase she could't find an affordable place to live.

I currently pay $640 a month for a 1 bedroom and utilities are included, this is very good for the Twin Cities.  Really the place is just so old that they can't charge seperatly for electric & heat.  I just got my rent extension, starting 9/08 my rent will go up $10, but this is the part that gets me, they are going to start charging $85 a month for utitlties and for renovations.   I've been hearing since I moved in that they are going to fix it up, renovate, etc...watch me hold my breath.  So, what the hell are they using my rent for?  Also, the place is a historical building, which means that they are getting government money for the renovations.  This isn't just double dipping-this is triple dipping.  I'm going to check with a lawyer about this.  A couple years ago they tried charging $35 extra during the winter months for heat, I refused to pay it.  There's no way to turn off heat to just 1 unit, and they backed off and didn't make me.

I'm going to plug my favorite music site: Hype Machine.

It's the coolest!!  It pulls songs from Blogs and you can listen for free as much as you want.  The best thing is that the company I work for doesn't know about it yet, so they haven't blocked it.  Yea=:)

I took last Friday as a PTO, yeah long weekends.  I feel asleep Thursday night, around 9:30p when I was tired and woke up on my own at about 7a.  I completely slept through the night & felt so good.  It made me think, I wish I had money & didn't have to work, just so I could go to bed when I was tired and wake up when I feel like it.  I had really good itentions of cleaning my apartment.  Get this I even bought a Shark Steam Mop:

(Doesn't she look happy?!)

Along with a power scruber thing, ugh I hate scrubbing the bathroom.  But, I didn't I just flooped, and oh, it was soo good:)

I also watched, WonderFalls.

A very cool, unique funny show, that was on the Fox Network in 2004 and got cancelled after 4 episodes!!  Fans tried to stop them, even setting up a Save Wonderfalls site.  One of the reasons I don't even start watching new shows anymore.  Anyway, this DVD has all 13 episodes that were made.  It was created by the same guy who did Dead Like Me, also another show that I really liked, that was cancelled after 2 seasons. It only $15 at Target, I highly reomend it.

I also went to see Horton Hears a Who, with a couple friends.  It is the BEST!!! So, incredibly funny!!! I highly recomend it!  I don't have kids, but after that I wanted to go out & buy every Dr Suess book.  They all had such great messages, the books take on a whole new meaning as an adult.

I also watched alot of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends on the Cartoon Network.  I love that cartoon.  I want Bloo to be my imaginary friend;)

My apartment building is basically at one end of the 10 Ave Bridge with runs parrelle to the 35W Bridge, and the portion that collapsed.  Now, that the weather is getting warmer, they are working 24/7!!!  I have bright lights shinning into my bedroom, not to mention the constant beeping of trucks backing up, and other kinds of banging noises, and I sleep with foam earplugs in.  I tired & my eays are red & blood shot today.

A friend of mine who loves Smallville sent me this link:
http://www.tvsquad.com/2008/03/18/kirsten-kreuk-will-only-be-a-part-timer-for-smallvilles-eighth/

I may actually watch it.  I admit I've never been very good with watching Smallville.  When it started they took the Kenny Braverman/Coduict, whole Death of Clark Kent Storyline and extended to the whole town.  It reminded me of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, freak of the week formula...Buffy fighting demons, Clark fighting kyrpton mutants.  I also always found Lana annoying as hell, in any media I don't like her.  The craziest thing about the whole Superman story is the strange love triangle he as Clark & Superman has with Lois, which Smallville didn't even have.  I tried to watch more when they brought Lois on in S4, but I forget where I read this, but I heard DC gave Smallville rules, like S4 she could only be used for 5 episodes, there could be no flying scenes, she can't know that Clark has ablities, and no romance.  Then for S6 & 7, Smallville could only use her for 13 episodes, but still now romance, no knowledge of his poweres, etc....Season 8 is supposed to be the last so maybe they will actually start something with Lois & Clark.

Just no ideas whatsoever...On another note, I hate my job, office, boss...I work for a large Fortune 500 Corporation, don't even want to say what industry they are in, becuase most would probably figure out the company becuuse of the city I live, alot of people in the Twin Cities work for this corporation. I took an Administration Assistant job, a few years ago, with the hope that I would be able to work move fairly easily to a position that more my background, like HR, since large companies like posting internally...I really should of known better...and my boss is really shall we say mercurial, this is just not where I planned to be at this point of my life...then to top it all off, Im sore today, becuase I was running late yesterday morning and slipped on a patch of ice...

Anyway, I don't remember who I got this from (if it was from you, sorry), but...

OK, I'm a dork!! I know;)  I live in the Twin Cities, headquarters of Target even, and soo many stores sold out when it came out.  I found it at Wal-Mart at MidWay.

I really liked Justice League: The New Frontier, could've been longer.  I got the special 2 disc version, becuase I'm a pop-culture, comic, mythology, Joseph Campbell kind of geek.  Even though Lois's part was small, I liked it.  Now, I so have to get the graphic novel:D

Oh, I also bought, but haven't had the time to watch Wonder Woman, Season 1.

The show was on before I was born, but when I was around 4 it used to on in re-runs.  At that time, my parents & I (I'm and oldest child) lived in a very large apartment building.  The vast majority of the kids my age where boys, there was really only 2 girls my age, to this day, the majority of my close friends are guys.  Everyone knows boys tie blankets around their knecks and pretend to be Superman.  I would pretend I was Wonder Woman and would spin around.  OK, I was a dorking kid too:D

Ok, I really shouldn't spend too much time in the DVD section, because I also bought  Forbidden Hollywood, Volume 2 (Can you believe that's Betty Davis on the cover?)

Now, don't get the wrong idea, the cashier gave me a funny look when she scanned the box.  It's a collection of Pre-Code Hollywood movies, made during 1929-34.  By today's standards they are nothing, but in the 1930's they were considered scandalous.  It's a time that vamps & tramps could have happy endings.  What often made these movies crazier though, was that the studios would want to keep the movies at 60-75 minutes, so they could have more showwings and make more money.  The movies would get cut down in thses sort-of crazy ways.  I watched the The Divorcee, a woman gets divorced and starts dating (sleeping) around.  A Free Soul, a young woman falls for a gangster and has (gasp) pre-marital sex.  Both of these had Norma Shearer, I admit I've never been much of a fan of hers, but I admit I've only seen her in a couple things.  She won an Oscar for the 1st and the 2nd had Cary Grant as the gangster.  The collection also includes:  3 on a MatchFemale,  Night Nurse, and a documentary called: Thou Shalt Not: Sex, Sin, & Censorship in Pre-Code Hollywood.  I haven't had time to watch these yet.

The weather is getting better here, it's going to get in the 30's this week!!!  I'm really sick of the cold!!!

I apparently am in the wrong profession;-)

I really haven't posted anything for a time because, I've been feeling rather crappy lately.  It been beautiful & sunny, but cold as hell & honestly I'm just so sick of it.  Add on top of that my boss has been in the office before I get here & after I leave, with no breaks...ugh!!! I've also been waking up at about 4a for a week now & haven't been able to get back to sleep.
